Go Condi, go

Condi Rice is cruising to secretary of statehood, and proving her subtle political savvy is more than enough to handle Senate Democrats–particularly Barbara Boxer.

Boxer, not the brightest bulb in the Senate by any means, leaked days ago that she was going to try to embarass Rice, down the the exact words she planned to used to call Rice a liar: “I personally believe that your loyalty to the mission you were given overwhelmed your respect for the truth.”

Of course, when Boxer actually did get around to making this absurd statement, Condi was ready. She cut Boxer off at the end of her statement, saying “Senator, we can have this discussion in any way that you would like, but I really hope that you will refrain from impugning my integrity.” Boxer’s soundbite turned into Condi’s soundbite, and every radio station that played that clip played Boxer’s accusation and Condi’s quick dismissal–giving Condi the last word.

Barbara Boxer is a complete twit. I like Condi. I think Bush made a mistake making her Sec of State, because she’s going to have to go to the Hill and testify regularly. That will undercut her effectiveness within the administration. Powell had no authority, but at least he could appease the Senate because they knew he had no authority. That’s going to be a tough line for Condi to walk.
