Hail to the King, baby
I don’t usually blog specifics about the Seattle Mariners these days–others handle that sort of thing much more ably. But tonight? Oh, what a game was tonight. After hearing that future-superstar Felix Hernandez was making his Safeco debut, Lorraine and I bought dirt-cheap outfield tickets for the historic occasion. Easily the best $14 I’ve ever spent on baseball.
“King” Felix was unstoppable, pitching 8 innings of shut-out baseball with zero walks and 6 strikeouts. This was good, because Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse was nearly as hot, but the Mariners got the only run they needed from a double by rookie Jeremy Reed, followed by a triple by rookie Yuniesky Betancourt (fun fact: this was Betancourt’s second triple of his 10-game major league career–his first came in his first major league at-bat, at the last game I attended).
One thing you should know about Felix if you don’t already–the kid is nineteen years old.
The Mariner’s are playing poorly this season, true (though they are 4-3 while I’m at the ballpark). But with gems like these, I’m enjoying myself more than I have in years. (And Matt, you can keep your drunken east-coast baseball, thank you very much.)
