Washington’s real gender gap
In poking around the CNN exit polls for Bush and Rossi here in Washington for the last post, I discovered something fascinating. I put it to you in the form of a quiz.
Q: Which demographic did Bush do better in?
- Protestants
- Households making more than $100,000 a year
- Non-white men
- Those 60 years old and older
A: Non-white men.
According to CNN’s exit poll, Bush won 59% of non-white men in Washington, and Rossi won 54%. Meanwhile, Kerry and Gregoire both won over 70% of non-white women. Compared to the 5% white gender-gap for Rossi and the 3% white gender-gap for Bush, the gender-gap among non-whites was over 30%
The sample size for non-whites in this poll is pretty small–only about 260 people–so the numbers can’t be taken as exact. But they are certainly good indicators, and they indicate something that should wake a lot of people up and destroy quite a few stereotypes. I hope someone’s doing a lot more polling to see if this is right, because if these numbers are even close to accurate, then a lot of assumptions that Washington’s political activists make must be chucked right out the window. There is an opportunity here for Washington’s Republicans, if we’ll just reach out and take it.

If you believe this poll has any basis in reality, you’re on the pipe.
Otherwise, keep up the good work.
